"...Then came the Pongos, looking noble....They had splendid heads, fine shoulders, strong legs, and straight tails. The spots on their bodies were jet-black and mostly the size of a two-shilling piece; they had smaller spots on their heads, legs, and tails. Their noses and eyerims were black."
Distinctive animals, clearly--and yet when the adult dogs rescue their puppies from two dognappers, they must hide their spots with soot to fool their captors. Hiding in plain sight, the dogs are hoping for normalcy, unobtrusiveness, and escape.
Out and about in the misty rain today in London, I noticed many kinds of patterns all around me--some distinctive and some more subtle. Which one is your favorite?
